12-year-old Angelina Naa Adorkor’s life changed forever in the early hours of Thursday, August 13, 2026.

She had risen early to accompany her ailing father to the morgue, where the body of her recently deceased mother was being kept.

But on their way, along the Ofankor Barrier stretch, tragedy struck.

They were involved in a multi-vehicular crash involving two tipper trucks, two Sprinter buses, two saloon cars and a tricycle.

Wreckage of one of the vehicles

The crash claimed 12 lives and left 22 others injured.

One of the saloon cars involved belonged to Angelina’s father, who sadly died at the scene.

Already grieving the loss of her mother, Angelina was now left orphaned.

But the tragedy did not end there.

The 12-year-old suffered traumatic injuries that resulted in the amputation of both legs below the knees. She also sustained serious injuries to both arms and required emergency surgery and multiple blood transfusions after being rushed to the Ga East Municipal Hospital.

Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon Dr. Ariel Francisco Morejón Pérez, who was part of the medical team that treated Angelina, says the young girl arrived at the hospital in critical condition.

“She had a traumatic amputation—bilateral leg below-knee procedure. She has another big injury in the right forearm, and a forearm fracture in the left arm.”

Dr. Morejón Pérez says Angelina’s injuries were compounded by contamination from the crash scene, making her wounds particularly difficult to manage.

He explained that the injuries require close monitoring and attentive care because of the severe contamination and infection risk.

For Angelina, what began as a routine trip to accompany her sick father to the morgue has instead left her facing life without both parents, and a long and difficult road to recovery.

In excruciating pain at the Ga East Municipal Hospital, young Angelina has been calling for her father every day since the accident.

She does not know that he did not survive the crash.

For Senior Specialist and Medical Superintendent of the Ga East Municipal Hospital, Dr. Ayuba Abdulai, the 12-year-old’s case is particularly heartbreaking.

He says she is severely traumatised and is receiving psychological support alongside treatment for her physical injuries.

He is also appealing to government to resource community hospitals such as Ga East with the equipment and specialist services needed to manage major trauma cases and reduce the need for constant referrals.

Sandra, Angelina’s aunt is appealing to government, corporate organisations and other well-meaning individuals to support Angelina’s recovery and help her reintegrate into society and return to school when she is medically fit.

Apart from Angelina, three other victims were brought to the Ga East Municipal Hospital. Two have since been discharged after sustaining minor injuries.

Another victim, Naomi Amidu, is stable and is expected to make a full recovery, but she too needs financial support to meet the cost of her treatment.

At the Achimota Hospital, four victims were also admitted.

Two have since been transferred to the Ridge Hospital, while the other two have been discharged.

As the survivors continue to recover, calls are growing for stronger road-safety enforcement and improved lighting along major highways to help prevent similar tragedies.
