Deputy General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Foyo Gbande, has warned party members against allowing envy, personal interests and the pursuit of political power to destroy relationships within the party.

Speaking at a meeting with party executives from various constituencies, ward coordinators, MMDCEs and assembly members in the Volta Region, Mr Gbande said the growing tendency among some party members to undermine one another poses a serious threat to the NDC and the government.

He said comradeship within the party appears to be weakening, with members increasingly driven by personal interests rather than the collective good.

“Comradeship is dying in the NDC. Envy has become the order of the day,” he said, cautioning that political power should not become a reason for party members to destroy one another over narrow interests.

Mr Gbande also urged party members to desist from celebrating the downfall of their colleagues, warning that those who undermine others today could face similar treatment tomorrow.

“When you destroy what belongs to someone, you will reap what you sow,” he cautioned.

He said the problem goes beyond individual disagreements, arguing that the lack of strong relationships within the party and government creates an environment in which members are more interested in bringing each other down than protecting and supporting one another.

“The danger in the NDC and our government is the lack of relationships. Everyone is driven by interest,” he said.

Mr Gbande stressed the need for party members to uphold the principle of treating others as they would want to be treated, noting that the same values are reflected in the Bible, the Quran and traditional belief systems.

He further warned that the consequences of internal hostility may not be immediately apparent, urging members to remember that political fortunes can change.

“We know the beginning, we don’t know the finish. We know today, but we don’t know tomorrow,” he said.

The meeting was also used to address grievances ahead of the party’s upcoming constituency elections and to strengthen the party’s grassroots structures in the region.

The NDC Deputy General Secretary announced plans for town-hall engagements to be led by MMDCEs, with support from Members of Parliament and party structures, to account to constituents on the performance and achievements of the government, MPs and chief executives.

The engagements are expected to provide an opportunity for the party and government representatives to communicate directly with constituents while responding to concerns at the grassroots.
