Deputy General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Foyo Gbande, has said it is his wish that President John Dramani Mahama avails himself to run for the 2028 general elections.
According to him, he owes nobody an apology for that opinion, indicating his wish is solely based on governance continuation rather than a mere election contest.
Speaking on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, on Monday, May 11, 2026, Gbande indicated that it is time party members come together to help President Mahama succeed, rather than focus on the presidential ambitions of some of his appointees, which he says could affect the NDC.
He explained that the NDC needs a united front, saying President Mahama opting to contest again is what would stop the back and forth and the recent divisions in the party as a result of people’s quest to become the party’s next flagbearer.
“We need to come to a point where we respect ourselves, we show each other recognition and then we come together to say ‘let’s help President Mahama to succeed.’
“I’m one ardent person who believes that President Mahama should give us the opportunity and make himself available to run again as President. I’m one person who believes that and I don’t apologise to anybody for that. That’s my opinion,” he told host, Captain Smart.
Gbande explained that his position is due to the fact that “our party is at a place where we need a synergy, a united front. We are not going for an election. We are continuing a government and when you get to that place, the indices are different.”
Meanwhile, debates over the President’s ability to contest again or not became rife, with President Mahama coming out on several occasions to deny any intentions to contest again.
