Senior Lecturer at the Department of Political Science, University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has said Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko stands taller than all the remaining contenders in the NPP chairmanship race.
Speaking on Ghana Tonight on TV3 on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, following the withdrawal of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, Dr. Asah-Asante said Boakye Agyarko is the clear favourite to win the contest.
“I believe it is the game of Boakye Agyarko. I have no doubts in my mind,” he said, arguing that “he stands taller than all of them who are contesting with him.”
According to him, Agyarko “has what it takes to lead the party and he will be a better Chairman for the party if he wins, for a very long time.”
Dr. Asah-Asante described Boakye Agyarko as a towering personality with the experience, discipline and ideas needed to lead the NPP. “He has the experience, he has the ideas that he can push through the system, he is very disciplined and very strong in terms of his mental attitude and the way he pursue this thing.”
He said even though the other contenders will compete with him, they will not match his strengths.
“He is a very strong candidate, I have no doubt in my mind. Yes, others can compete but he will win them,” he added.
“We know the person we are talking about when we are talking about Boakye Agyarko. He is a towering personality. I have no doubts in my mind,” he stressed.
Commenting on the other contenders, Paul Awentame Afoko, John Boadu and Sammy Crabbe, Dr. Asah-Asante acknowledged their contributions to the party but maintained they do not match up to Boakye Agyarko.
“It is true that Afoko is a gentleman, he is experienced, it is unfortunate that he could not be in the position for long because of what happened. And so is the other two contestants. Sammy Crabbe, we saw him under Kufuor and of course John Boadu, he has also served his party well,” he noted.
“But if you put all of them together, they themselves know that Boakye Agyarko is the man. They know, they can’t say it,” Dr. Asah-Asante maintained.
Meanwhile, Dr. Asah-Asante has said the debate of the threats Wontumi would have pulled ended the moment he resigned from the contest.
