The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has said the Asante political system is often misunderstood beyond its visible symbols – the Golden Stool, royal umbrellas, drums, linguists, the swords, procession and gold ornaments.

According to him, most people who come close to the Asante political system often misunderstand how it works.

He made this known while delivering a royal lecture at Howard University in Washington DC, United States of America, on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

He observed that these symbols are very important because they are the visible language through which memory and authority are communicated. “Beneath the splendor lies a sophisticated philosophy of political responsibility,” he said.

He explained that the deep philosophy behind the symbols reflects accountability, trusteeship and service to the people, which should guide leadership in all systems of governance.

The Asantehene is on a working visit to the United States ahead of the upcoming Akwasidae.
