Former Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Yaw Boakye Antwi, has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) must secure at least 100 seats in Parliament in the 2028 elections to be able to hold the government in check.
He says the current numbers of the party in Parliament are inadequate and cannot be used to challenge the government on critical decisions that require the backing of the House.
Mr Boakye Antwi made the comments in an interview on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, on Monday, August 31, 2026, where he discussed the party’s parliamentary strength and its prospects ahead of the 2028 general elections.
According to him, the governing National Democratic Congress is able to have its way in Parliament because it controls a commanding majority, a situation that makes it difficult for the opposition to restrain or influence decisions.
He cited the recent approval of Supreme Court justices as a clear example of the power of numbers, noting that such approvals would not have been possible if the governing party did not have overwhelming numbers in the House.
“From 2000, we get our 100 seats at least, in Parliament to hold the government. Because they (NDC) have the numbers, they are able to do whatever they want in Parliament. Example is the Supreme Court justices that were approved recently. But if they didn’t have the numbers, they wouldn’t be able to do it,” he said.
The NPP General Secretary aspirant said party faithful must appreciate the reality that without a stronger parliamentary presence, the party cannot effectively hold the government accountable.
He argued that the 2028 election must focus heavily on parliamentary seats, stressing that winning parliamentary seats is the core work of the General Secretary, the reason the current numbers should guide the party to elect him as its next General Secretary.
“So this upcoming election, I want the party faithful to know that our numbers are inadequate and we can’t use it for anything and the parliamentary election is the work of the General Secretary. That’s why every General Secretary that loses parliamentary seats is voted out,” he noted.
Mr Boakye Antwi further explained that winning the presidency becomes a bonus when the party wins more parliamentary seats, insisting that parliamentary strength must be the priority going into 2028.
“The more parliamentary seats are won, Jubilee House becomes a bonus. The last time we commanded two-thirds of Parliament was 1969 in Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia’s time but today, NDC controls two-thirds of Parliament,” he said.
Mr. Boakye Antwi is eyeing the NPP General Secretary position as the party rebuilds for 2028. He declared his intention to contest the General Secretary position of the NPP as it prepares for its national executive elections on Saturday, October 3, 2026.

Born on May 7, 1970 at Baman Kwabre in the Ashanti region, Bokye Antwi is a banker and businessman cum politician.
He holds a Higher National Diploma from Westminster College, UK, a BA in Business Administration and a PGDIP in Market Research from the University of Westminster.
He worked with Barclays Bank, now ABSA, from 1999 to 2002, served as Administrator at the UK’s Lord Chancellor’s Department from 2002 to 2006, and was Director of EUGASS Limited from 2006 to 2016.
Politically, he rose through the NPP UK and Ireland branch before winning the Subin seat, which he held from 2017 to 2025. He also served as Deputy Minister of Works and Housing.
He is campaigning on a five-point UNITE agenda – Unite the party, Nurture the grassroots, Improve discipline and internal efficiency, Transform engagement and rebuild trust, and Execute a winning strategy for 2028. His mantra on the campaign trail has been “No discipline, No power.”
