Former Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Yaw Boakye Antwi, has taken a swipe at the current leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), saying no General Secretary has ever retained his position after leading the party to opposition.
According to General Secretary aspirant of the NPP, the party needs new leadership to make Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia President in the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, on Monday, August 31, 2026, Mr. Boakye Antwi recounted that the first General Secretary who took the NPP to opposition, Nana Ohene Ntow, was dethroned in Kumasi.
He said the party is heading back to Kumasi for its conference and history will repeat itself. “The first General Secretary that took us to opposition was Nana Ohene Ntow and was dethroned in Kumasi and we are going back to Kumasi,” he stated, stressing that “the party needs a new leadership to make Dr. Bawumia President.”
He insisted that Ghanaians were not pleased with what the party leadership did, which is why they sent the NPP to opposition with the party’s worst results ever since 1992.
“Ghanaians were not pleased with what the party leadership did, that’s why they sent us to opposition,” he emphasised, adding that what the party needs to return to power is “more dynamic, more experienced people who can take over the party to make it more relevant and attractive.”
Mr. Boakye Antwi is eyeing the NPP General Secretary position as the party rebuilds for 2028. He declared his intention to contest the General Secretary position of the NPP as it prepares for its national executive elections on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
About Eugene Yaw Boakye Antwi
Born on May 7, 1970 at Baman Kwabre in the Ashanti region, Bokye Antwi is a banker and businessman cum politician.
He holds a Higher National Diploma from Westminster College, UK, a BA in Business Administration and a PGDIP in Market Research from the University of Westminster.
He worked with Barclays Bank, now ABSA, from 1999 to 2002, served as Administrator at the UK’s Lord Chancellor’s Department from 2002 to 2006, and was Director of EUGASS Limited from 2006 to 2016.
Politically, he rose through the NPP UK and Ireland branch before winning the Subin seat, which he held from 2017 to 2025. He also served as Deputy Minister of Works and Housing.
He is campaigning on a five-point UNITE agenda – Unite the party, Nurture the grassroots, Improve discipline and internal efficiency, Transform engagement and rebuild trust, and Execute a winning strategy for 2028. His mantra on the campaign trail has been “No discipline, No power.”
