The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has deployed a reinforcement team to New Winneba in the Central region following a violent mob attack that left three persons dead and about 15 others injured.
The attack was carried out by an estimated 300 irate youth believed to be from Gomoa Oguaakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, who stormed the township armed with guns, cutlasses, stones and sticks.
The incident, according to police, occurred on Tuesday, September 1, at about 10:40 a.m., when the group invaded homes, shops and other properties belonging to natives and launched attacks on residents.
About 15 people, including a police officer, sustained injuries and were rushed to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment. Three persons were later confirmed dead by the medical officer on duty.
Personnel from the Winneba, Agona Swedru and Mankessim Divisional Commands were initially dispatched to the area, with the IGP subsequently ordering additional reinforcement from the National Headquarters, including two armoured vehicles.
The police say six snap checkpoints have been mounted across the area while day and night patrols have been intensified.
Officers from the Police Intelligence Directorate and the Criminal Investigations Department have also been deployed to monitor developments.Six persons have been arrested in connection with the rioting.
They have been identified as Kweku Kakraba, 52, Thomas Arko, 19, Samuel Tulasi, 19, Samuel Gyasi, 22, Emmanuel Okyere, 22, and Seth Osei, 22.
A locally manufactured single-barrel gun and an empty AAA cartridge were retrieved from the scene.Police say the area remains calm and under control, with the suspects in custody assisting with investigations.
