Three persons have been confirmed dead and at least 15 others injured after a violent attack among residents at New Winneba in the Central region.
Police say about 300 irate youth from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze stormed the New Winneba township at about 10:40 am on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, wielding guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks.
The mob reportedly attacked residents, raided stores and homes, and destroyed properties.
The injured, including a police officer, were rushed to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital at Winneba for treatment where a medical officer on duty confirmed three deaths.
Following the attack, police personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters, Agona Swedru and Mankessim Divisions, as well as the IGP’s Special Team with two armoured vehicles from the National Headquarters, were deployed to restore calm.
Police have since arrested six suspects in connection with the rioting. They are Kweku Kakraba, 52, Thomas Arko, 19, Samuel Tulasi, 19, Samuel Gyasi, 22, Emmanuel Okyere, 22, and Seth Osei, 22.
One locally manufactured single-barrel gun and one AAA empty cartridge were retrieved from the crime scene.
The Central Regional Police Public Affairs Unit say six snap checkpoints have been mounted in the area, with day and night patrols intensified to avert further escalation.
Personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) and Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have also been deployed to monitor the situation.
“The area remains calm, and the situation is currently under control. All six suspects are in police custody assisting with investigations,” Chief Inspector Isaac Evans Ettie of the Public Affairs Unit/CR said in a statement.
