Dr. Bernard Atuguba, a specialist obstetrician and gynecologist, has disproved a common belief that swollen legs during pregnancy means a woman is expecting twins.

Speaking on a recent episode of The Afternoon Show on TV3, Dr. Atuguba said, “Simply put, swollen legs during pregnancy do not automatically mean that a woman is expecting twins. Although some people may see it as a sign of carrying two babies, there are other reasons why a woman’s legs may become swollen during pregnancy.”

He explained that swollen legs can happen to pregnant women for different reasons and does not automatically mean they are carrying two babies.

The statement comes at a time when many people believe that certain changes in a pregnant woman’s body can tell whether she is expecting twins. However, he advised people not to quickly draw conclusions based on such signs.

According to Dr. Bernard Atuguba, the best way for an expectant mother to know how her pregnancy is progressing is to seek proper medical advice rather than relying on what people say or believe.

The specialist obstetrician and gynecologist’s comment is a reminder that pregnancy can affect women differently.

“A symptom experienced by one woman may not necessarily mean the same thing for another,” he stressed.

He therefore encouraged pregnant women to pay attention to changes in their bodies and speak to a qualified health professional when they have concerns, instead of worrying based on assumptions.
