The 2026 Oguaa Fetu Afahye has recorded its highest attendance in recent years, with about 200,000 people thronging Cape Coast to celebrate.
This was disclosed in an exclusive interview by the Chairperson of the Oguaa Fetu Afahye Planning Committee, Charlotte Osei.
Speaking on the assessment of this year’s Afahye, Madam Osei said every year the committee reflects on what it did well and how to improve in the coming year.
According to her, the festival usually attracts about 150,000 people annually, but this year alone the figure has risen to about 200,000 people who came from different parts of the country to Cape Coast within just one week to celebrate.
She noted that such numbers have huge economic significance for the city, creating business opportunities for both big and small enterprises. According to her, one cannot get a hotel room in Cape Coast at this time of the year, while restaurants are selling out, indicating a boom in business.
Meanwhile, Madam Osei appealed to the people of Cape Coast to continue to support the festival ahead of the 2027 edition, stressing that the festival belongs to them and they stand to benefit the most.
She added that the committee expects businesses to improve their services and scale up operations to anticipate even bigger numbers next year.
In a related development, the Safohen of Bentsir No.1 Asafo Company who serves as Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Maame Efua Houadjeto, who is also enstooled as Safohene Nana Nhyiraba Koguwa II, highlighted the importance of the Fetu Afahye and how the history of Cape Coast continues to uplift its people.
She revealed that the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has introduced a festival brass band competition aimed at reviving Ghana’s drumming culture and encouraging the youth to embrace their heritage rather than copying foreign cultures.
