The Nsuta Circuit Court in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region has sentenced a 23-year-old driver, Amobilah Richard, alias Sim One, to a fine of GH¢3,600 for stealing GH¢5,100 belonging to a fellow driver.
The court, presided over by His Lordship Simon Nketiah Gagah, handed down the sentence on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector C. K. Gyesi, told the court that the complainant, Opoku Amankwah, is a tipper-truck driver, while the accused is also a driver, with both men residing at Nsuta.
According to the prosecution, the complainant had, for some time, been recording a theft of money from his room whenever he returned from work, despite keeping the room locked.
The court heard that on September 5, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m., Mr Amankwah returned from work and noticed that someone had entered his room without forcing the door.
Upon checking where he had kept his money, he discovered that GH¢5,100, which he had placed under his bag, had been stolen. Three cans of Malta Guinness and a Kalypo fruit drink were also missing.
The complainant subsequently began making inquiries into the theft.
The complainant upon investigation, discovered that the accused had been visiting the house in his absence. They had initially assumed that he was visiting because he was closely acquainted with the complainant’s mother.
Later that evening, at about 8:00 p.m., the complainant and the witnesses apprehended the accused and handed him over to the Nsuta Police, where a formal report was lodged.
During interrogation, the accused admitted the offence in his caution statement in the presence of an independent investigator. He told investigators that he had used the stolen money to settle a debt.
He further confessed that he had access to one of the complainant’s spare keys and had been using it to gain entry into the room and steal money.
Following investigations, he was charged with stealing and arraigned before the court.
After convicting him, the court imposed a GH¢3,600 fine, with a default sentence of two years’ imprisonment.
The court also ordered the accused to refund the GH¢5,100 stolen from the complainant, or, in default, serve an additional one-year prison term.
