The spokesperson for the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has dismissed claims that President John Dramani Mahama has abandoned the Minister to deal with challenges in the education sector alone.
Hashmin Mohammed says claims by former Manhyia North Member of Parliament (MP), Collins Owusu Amankwah, that the President has left Mr Iddrisu to struggle are factually wrong and politically motivated.
He says attempts to link challenges with the 2026 Computerised School Selection and Placement System, CSSPS, to presidential neglect is an attempt to create a false political narrative.
According to him, the CSSPS is functioning and is being reformed to address longstanding weaknesses and improve the experience of students, parents and schools.
He said the Ministry inherited a system that needed major reforms and had decided to confront the challenges instead of blaming past administrations.
Mr Mohammed said the Minister has introduced interventions, including the decentralisation of placement resolution centres, to bring assistance closer to parents and students.
He said challenges with a complex national exercise like school placement should not be interpreted as lack of government support.
“President John Dramani Mahama did not appoint Hon. Haruna Iddrisu to fail. He appointed him to fix problems. And he is supporting him to do exactly that,” he said.
He noted that the President’s support is reflected in policies, resource allocation and interventions to transform the sector.
Government, he said, is addressing infrastructure deficits, expanding school capacity and improving access to teaching and learning materials.
The goal, he added, is to create enough space in Category A and B schools so that no Ghanaian child is denied quality secondary education due to lack of infrastructure.
Mr Mohammed urged political actors to base discussions on education on facts and not political convenience.He said the CSSPS is being improved, not abandoned, and the Education Minister is being supported, not isolated.
