Akwatia MP Bernard Bediako Baidoo has opposed calls for the complete abolition of Ghana’s Council of State, arguing that the body still has an important role to play in governance.
Speaking on the KeyPoints with Alfred Ocansey, the MP said he supports reforms, thus believes the provision allowing the President to appoint 11 members should be removed.
“I am not for abolishing the Council of State. Let’s take out the appointments by the President so that they can still be there,” he said on September 12.
He proposed a Council made up of institutional representatives, including former Chief Justices, former IGPs, former Chiefs of Defence Staff and the President of the National House of Chiefs.
Mr. Baidoo argued that such members bring professional expertise and institutional experience that can benefit the President, even though their advice is not legally binding.
He further said elected regional representatives could make the Council more nationally representative and reduce the influence of presidential appointments.
