Police have arrested four persons including two teachers for allegedly kidnapping and torturing a 30-year-old man from Assin Fosu in the Assin Central district of the Central region.
The suspects are said to have abducted Bismarck Amo in Kumasi on September 6, after luring him from Assin Fosu under the pretext of meeting a new girlfriend.
According to the police, the arrest followed a coordinated intelligence-led operation code-named “Operation Rescue the Victim and Arrest the Perpetrators”.
This was led by the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, with support from the Central North Regional Command, the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, CID Headquarters and Ashanti Regional PID.
The suspects have been named as Mavis Badu Acheampong, 42, a teacher at Kumasi Girls SHS; Kenneth Opoku Kwarteng, alias Culture, also a teacher at the same school; Charles Doku, 53, a security guard; and Oteng Baffour, 31, an electrician.
All are residents of Breman UGC in Kumasi. Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim allegedly defrauded Mavis Badu Acheampong of an unspecified amount of money on September 3, 2026.
Police say upon realising she had been defrauded, Mavis allegedly conspired with her husband, a senior military officer said to be outside the country, to lure Amo to Kumasi.
He was allegedly held hostage at Mavis’ residence from September 6 to September 11 and subjected to severe torture.
Police say the suspects stripped the victim naked, assaulted him and filmed the act, which they sent to his family while demanding ransom.
The family is said to have paid GH¢19,500 but the suspects allegedly demanded an additional GH¢30,500 and threatened to kill him if they failed to pay.
The family reported the matter to the Regional CID at Assin Fosu on September 8, after paying the initial ransom.
On September 11, police say the suspects attempted to move the victim to a new location to evade arrest, but tactical teams intercepted them mid-transit and rescued him.
He was found partially unconscious with severe bruises and has since been admitted to hospital under police guard.
All four suspects are in custody and are being processed for court. Police say efforts are underway to arrest the military officer and other accomplices currently at large.
Family’s account
Meanwhile, a family member of Mavis, who identified herself as Afia Adutwumwaa, has given a different account in a video circulating on social media.
According to her, Mavis lost GH¢44,800 through mobile money and bank fraud after receiving a call from someone posing as an MTN official who asked her to reset her MoMo OTP.
She claimed the family traced one of the numbers used in the transaction to Amo and used a woman to lure him to Kumasi under the pretext of a relationship.
She said Amo was held for three days, not five, and was later released and escorted to the Assin Fosu Police Station with transport fare, after which the family considered the matter resolved.
