The Administrator of the Ghana Sports Fund, Dr. David Kofi Wuaku, has said that the match between Ghana and The Gambia on September 19, is a chance for the country to show it can stand as one.
“Ghanaians disagree on many things, from politics to traffic to whose jollof is best,” Dr. Wuaku said. “But when the Black Stars step onto the pitch, the arguments stop.
The trader in Kumasi, the fisherman in Keta, the student in Tamale and the banker in Accra all want the same thing.”
He said few things in national life do this. Few institutions can bring millions of people to the same TV screen, radio or roadside speaker at the same moment.
“That is not a small thing. A country that can feel this united over a game should ask itself what else it can achieve together.”
He urged citizens to treat the match as a national gathering, not just a sporting event. “Wear the colours. Go to the stadium if you can. If you can’t, gather your neighbours and cheer with them.”
Dr. Wuaku closed with a challenge. “We do not need a trophy to prove we are one people. We only need to remember tomorrow’s feeling on the days when there is no match.”
