The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has paid glowing tribute to former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for their immense service to Ghana.
Speaking at the NPP National Delegates Conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026, Dr. Bawumia said the NPP has a proud record of implementing social interventions that directly impact the lives of ordinary Ghanaians, adding that the legacies of the two former leaders will never be forgotten.
He cited the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the School Feeding Programme and Free Maternal Care introduced under President Kufuor, and the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy under President Akufo-Addo as transformative policies that expanded access to healthcare and education and laid a strong foundation for national development.
“Remembering the party’s forebears, former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, their social interventions like NHIS, School Feeding and Free SHS will never be forgotten,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia also eulogized the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition, which teaches that freedom, enterprise and the rule of law are the foundations of prosperity.
He thanked the Ashanti Region, describing Kumasi as the heart of the NPP, for standing with the party in good times and hard times.
“When our tent needed holding up, Ashanti was one of the pillars that held us up. On behalf of every member of our party, I say ‘medaase’- Thank you,” he added.
He further paid tribute to Acting National Chairman Danquah Smith Buttey for steadying the party after the 2024 defeat, and to former Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) and National Chairman Stephen Ayesu Ntim for their dedicated service.
