Government is expected to take further action if striking teachers fail to suspend their industrial action by Friday, October 9, 2026.
Dr Smith Graham of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) disclosed this while speaking on Ghana Akoma on Akoma FM on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
According to him, both government and the teacher unions have signed documents as part of efforts to resolve the dispute and bring the strike to an end.
“Both parties have signed documents that should bring the strike to an end. You cannot remain on strike while we are still at the negotiation table.”
The comments come after negotiations between the FWSC, the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the various teacher unions failed to immediately result in the suspension of the industrial action.
Dr Graham said government has made considerable efforts to address the concerns raised by the teachers, while acknowledging that the unions also have legitimate expectations.
He, however, stressed that government may not be able to meet every demand being presented by the teachers.
“Government has really done well in handling this situation. The teachers have their expectations, just as the government does, but we cannot meet all of the teachers’ demands.”
The teacher unions have been on strike for several days over their demands, leaving thousands of students and parents uncertain about the resumption of teaching and learning.
The FWSC is expected to continue engaging the unions as efforts are made to resolve the outstanding issues.
Dr Smith Graham’s comments suggest that Friday could become an important deadline in determining the next step in the government’s response if the strike remains in force.
