Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah, says his knowledge of Jean Mensa is in her capacity as Chairperson of the Commission and nothing else.
When asked how well he knows the people he is going to work with, particularly Madam Jean Mensa, Dr Asamoah responded: “I know her as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission and that is how I know her.”
Dr Asamoah was speaking on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, following his swearing-in by President John Dramani Mahama, when co-host, Afia Tagor, asked him how well he knows the Chairperson he will be working with.
When asked if that was all he knew about her, Dr Asamoah answered in the affirmative, saying “Yes I am done.”
He, however, appeared to have a second thought and added more context to his working relationship with Madam Mensa.
Dr Asamoah recalled working at the Commission during the early part of Jean Mensa’s tenure, saying, “I was there at the finance directorate at the first election that she did.”
According to him, that period covered several major electoral exercises, including the infamous “Ayawaso [West Wuogon] by-election and we came to do the creation of the six new regions by way of referendum and we did the 2019 assembly elections and the 2020 general elections and the 2024 general elections.”
President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, October 12, 2026, swore in Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr. Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission at the Jubilee House.

The two replace Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, who was in charge of Corporate Affairs and resigned effective July 31, 2026, to return to academia at the University of Ghana, and Samuel Tettey, who was in charge of Operations and retired after attaining the mandatory retirement age of 65.
Dr Asamoah is a lawyer, chartered accountant and lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) with over 17 years experience in electoral administration.
He previously served the EC as Director of Finance, Director of the Training Centre and Head of Audit and played a role in the 2012 and 2016 general elections.
Ms Agbenyo previously served as Deputy Director for Operations at the Ghana TVET Service and as a Commissioner at the National Development Planning Commission.
