The Volta North Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect and seized an AK-47 assault rifle, two other firearms, ammunition and suspected narcotics at Alavanyo-Dzogbedze in the Kpando District.
The suspect, identified as Saviour Dzadze, was arrested on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at the premises of the Kpando Circuit Court after a complainant, Dodzi Kpakpamikpe, identified him as the person who had allegedly threatened his life.
According to the police, officers subsequently accompanied the suspect and the complainant to a cottage believed to be the suspect’s hideout at Alavanyo-Dzogbedze, where a search was conducted in the suspect’s presence.
The search led to the recovery of an AK-47 assault rifle, a pump-action gun, a locally manufactured single-barrel gun, 10 rounds of live AAA Lion cartridges and a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
The weapons and other exhibits have been conveyed to the Kpando Divisional Police Headquarters for further investigation.
During interrogation, Dzadze reportedly told investigators that his brother, Foster Dzadze, an electrician based in Accra, had given him the pump-action gun. He claimed the weapon was covered by documents but was unable to produce them.
Regarding the AK-47 rifle, the suspect allegedly told police that he obtained it through a barter arrangement with a man identified only as Komla, who exchanged the weapon for cannabis cultivated by the suspect.
Dzadze reportedly said he did not know Komla’s exact location.
The suspect remains in police custody assisting investigations, while efforts are underway to arrest his brother and identify the man said to have exchanged the rifle for cannabis.
Marine Police arrest another suspect over suspected cannabis
In a separate operation, the Kpando-based Marine Police arrested a 31-year-old man, Vincent Lotsu, for alleged unlawful cultivation and possession of suspected narcotic drugs.
The police said officers on routine patrol on September 13, 2026, discovered a fenced wooden structure along the Volta Lake at Mangoase in the Central Tongu District.
A search behind the fence reportedly uncovered a plantation of suspected Indian hemp and 16 sacks of dried leaves believed to be cannabis.
Lotsu and the exhibits were handed over to the Kpando Police Divisional Investigation Department, while samples of the suspected narcotics were sent to the crime laboratory for examination.
The suspect remains in police custody assisting investigations and is expected to be arraigned before court.
The Volta North Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying operations against drug trafficking, illegal firearms and related offences.
The command also urged young people to stay away from illicit activities and encouraged members of the public to provide information that could help the police combat crime.
It commended officers of the Kpando Divisional Command and the Marine Police unit for their response and professionalism, while acknowledging the leadership of Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
The police assured residents that efforts to maintain peace and security across the region would continue.
