For Fredrick Asare, reaching Africa’s biggest club stages is a new experience. Staying there long enough to make an impact is the ambition.

The Ghanaian goalkeeper is preparing for his first taste of CAF competition with Durban City, who have secured a historic place in the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup. His personal target is already set: reach the quarter-finals.

“Personally, I w ant to reach the quarter-finals of this tournament, and then we take it from there,” Asare told Muhammad KB.

But the goalkeeper understands that ambition alone will not carry Durban City through the competition.

“With a new coach, I think we have a lot to do in terms of the tactical approach to games,” he said, pointing to the work required as the team prepares for a new level of competition.

For Asare, the responsibility is personal, too. He wants to remain at the top of his game and keep as many clean sheets as possible to help the team progress.

His preparation also involves examining the finer details of his goalkeeping. He identified reading balls played behind the defence and judging when to come off his line as areas to develop, while placing particular emphasis on aerial duels.

It is a specific focus in a competition where the goalkeeper’s command of his area can become an important part of his team’s defensive work.

Durban City have already taken a significant step by reaching the group stage in their first continental campaign. For Asare, the next challenge is to turn that opportunity into a memorable personal and collective journey.

The quarter-finals remain his target. The clean sheets, tactical adjustments, and battles in the air are among the details that will shape the pursuit.

For a goalkeeper experiencing CAF competition for the first time, Africa offers a new stage. Asare wants to do more than simply appear on it.
