The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS), Wa, to immediately cease the offering of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy programmes in Public Health.
The Commission has also directed the University to reverse the admissions of students currently enrolled on the programmes.
The directive is contained in a letter dated Monday, October 26, 2026, addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of UBIDS, following a five-year cyclical institutional review of the University.
According to the letter, GTEC undertook the review from October 19 to October 23, 2026, and assessed the accreditation status of academic programmes offered by the University.
The Commission said the exercise revealed a number of regulatory breaches and concerns relating particularly to the MSc and PhD programmes in Public Health.
Specifically, the Commission observed that the programmes had not received the requisite policy approval from the Commission and consequently had not been accredited by GTEC.
It said notwithstanding the absence of accreditation, the University had commenced offering the programmes and admitted students who are currently enrolled.
It also observed that the programmes, although health-related, were being offered under the University’s Business School, raising concerns regarding their appropriate academic placement and oversight.
It further observed that the programmes had not received the requisite approval of the University’s Academic Board and also not aware by the Vice Chancellor.
The Commission said it considers the findings serious, particularly given the regulatory requirements governing the introduction, accreditation and delivery of academic programmes, particularly postgraduate programmes by tertiary education institutions in Ghana.
“In view of the foregoing, the Commission hereby directs the University to undertake the following actions: Immediate cessation of the programmes: Cease the offering of the MSc and PhD programmes in Public Health with immediate effect and reverse the admissions of students,” the letter stated.
