The Eastern Regional Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Shirley Naana Osei-Ampem, has said her administration has changed the perception of women in politics in the Region.
She says women are no longer measured with one thing when they venture into politics, as it used to be in the past.
In an interview on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, on Monday, November 2, 2026, where she appeared to discuss her re-election bid, she said her vision was to make women understand politics and that has been fruitful.
According to her, five former Women Organisers have now become MMDCEs and over 60% of aspirants in the upcoming constituency elections are women.
Her comments come ahead of the NDC Eastern Regional elections slated for November 14 and 15, 2026, where she is contesting for the Women’s Organiser position again. The party’s Elections Committee has confirmed that two aspirants filed for the position.
The regional elections form part of the NDC’s reorganisation after its victory in the 2024 general elections. The NPP in the Eastern Region held its regional elections on August 15, 2026, and retained Jeff Konadu Addo as Chairman, while Regina Bempong was elected as the new Women’s Organiser after defeating the incumbent, Mercy Amo Darko.
Shirley Osei-Ampem, however, said the NDC’s women’s wing in the Eastern Region has made significant strides, raising her optimism of retaining the seat.
“Our vision was to make women understand politics. In quote, every woman was measured with one thing whenever she ventures into politics. But now we’ve been able to conscientise them and now it has become a thing of the past in the Eastern Region,” she said in Twi.
“Every woman that comes out victorious knows it is by virtue of her works and not because she did something to get that position. Prior to my coming, many of the young ladies feared to join but now even our upcoming election, the ladies constitute over 60% so our party’s vision is coming to bear,” she further intimated.
Naana Osei-Ampem backed her claims with evidence, urging the women in the party to fortify themselves with knowledge in order to secure positions when the need be.
“So there were 5 Women Organisers who are now MMDCEs. So we are urging the women educate themselves so we can push them when a position comes,” she added.
She credited the Regional Chairman Dr. Mark Oliver Kevor and National Women’s Organiser Dr. Hanna Louisa Bisiw-Kotei for the growth.
“The Chairman Dr. Mark Oliver Kevor, has really helped the Women’s Wing. Because when we came, from 2020, we had 38% but as we speak, Eastern Region we have 48.6% and that’s because of our good work which women are very vital,” she said.
“And when our national boss joined us, we toured each constituency at least three times,” she stated.
