Some queen mothers belonging to various market units in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi, have expressed discontentment for what they describe as “a grave affront to our traditional leadership and a slap in the face to the good people of the Ashanti Region”, towards the Vice President.

The queens, belonging to the various markets say they are disappointed in the Vice President’s failure to meet them during his visit to the region as scheduled, having had to wait for him for nearly four hours.

According to them, a meeting was scheduled between themselves and the Vice President during his visit to the region.

After waiting between 2pm to 6pm, the queen mothers say they were unofficially informed that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is also the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) cannot meet with them.

The act, is what the queen mothers belonging to the Kumasi central market, Kejetia market, Race Course market, Suame market, and the Bantama market, have described as a demonstration of disregard for the “traditional institutions that are the bedrock of our nation’s fabric.”

In a statement issued by the queen mothers Monday, June 10, 2024, they demanded an apology and explanation from the Vice President for the blatant disregard and dishonour he exhibited towards them during his visit to the region.

PRESS RELEASE

10TH JUNE, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Queen mothers of the Kumasi central market, Kejetia market, Race Course market, Suame market, and the Bantama market Traditional Authorities Express Deep Dismay and Disappointment at the Vice President’s Failure to Honor a Scheduled Meeting with the Queen Mothers of the above mentioned markets all in the Kumasi metropolis.

Today, 10th June, 2024,The Traditional Authorities of the aforementioned markets were shocked and disappointed by the Vice President’s glaring disrespect and disregard for traditional authority. Despite confirmation and hours of waiting, the Vice President failed to show up for a scheduled meeting with the Queen Mothers, a revered and esteemed symbol of our region’s rich cultural heritage.

This unfortunate incident demonstrates a clear lack of regard for the traditional institutions that are the bedrock of our nation’s fabric. The Queen Mothers had graciously taken time off their busy schedules to receive the Vice President, only to be left waiting in vain.

In fact, the queen mothers were gathered with their subjects who are all traders, leaving their businesses even in the face of the excruciating economic hardship that has make businesses unprofitable to meet with the vice president from the hours of 2:00pm up to about 6:00pm. Only for them to unofficially be informed that the vice president can’t make it to the meeting.

We view this as a grave affront to our traditional leadership and a slap in the face to the good people of the Ashanti Region. We demand an explanation and an apology for this unacceptable behavior.

We will continue to uphold and respect our traditional authorities, and we expect the same from our national leaders.

Signed,

NANA WIAFE,
