At least 18 residents of Atwedie in the Asante Akyem South district of the Ashanti region have been hospitalised after consuming a popular dish prepared from rice and beans called waakye.

It was suspected that the dish which they purchased from a local vendor might have been contaminated.

Investigations revealed the accompanying stew had been “poisoned”.

According to reports, the victims had stomach ache and diarrhoea after consuming the dish, with the food vendor herself also falling victim to the suspected poison.

All victims were rushed to the hospital for medical attention with one of them undergoing a surgery due to the severity of the effect.

A report by Kumasi-based Kessben FM says some neighbours have expressed doubt about the vendor’s involvement in the incident but rather suspected her landlord whom they say is in a strain relationship with the woman.

A similar incident which occurred in Accra in January this year as reported by Graphic Online led to the death of five persons who also consumed waakye at Oyibi Bush Canteen.

The said incident affected about 40 people, five of which, including a lotto vendor and a pregnant woman, died.
