An Asante Bekwai circuit court presided has sentenced a 20-year-old mechanic to 25 years imprisonment for robbing and raping an 8-month-old pregnant young lady.

Akwasi Agyeman, the convict, broke into the room of the lady who is a candidate in the ongoing West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The young lady is a student of the Bekwai S.D.A Senior High School at Sanso, a community in the Bekwai municipality of the Ashanti reigion, robbed her of valuable items and subjected her to serious sexual activity.

The court presided over by Isaac Apietu sentenced Akwasi, after pleading guilty to the charge of robbery and rape.

Police Detective Chief Inspector Eric Twum told the court that the incident occurred on Sunday, August 25, 2024, at Sanso, near Bekwai.

He said the convict broke into the lady’s room at about midnight and threatened her with a knife, and demanded her to release all her valuable items to him.

The Chief Inspector continued that after taking away an iPhone 7, valued at GHC1,400 and an itel phone worth GHC1,000, Akwasi went ahead to rape the young lady who is eight months pregnant.

After screaming and shouting for help, some residents who heard her rushed to the scene and pursued the convict and got him arrested.

The Chief Inspector said a search of him after the arrest revealed the stolen items and the knife he used to commit the crime.

He was handed over to the police and after investigations, he was charged and brought before the court.
