The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Co-operative Credit Unions Association (GHACCUA), Cyprian K.A. Basina, has appealed to embassies in Ghana to recognize statements from his outfit as valid financial documents for visa applications.
Speaking at the 26th Annual Educational Conference of the Association in Takoradi, Cyprian K.A. Basina, expressed concern over frequent rejection of credit union financial statements by embassies.
The Chief Executive Officer explained that many Ghanaians do not operate traditional bank accounts but rather save and conduct all their financial activities with credit unions. According to him, it is therefore unfair for embassies to rely solely on bank statements as proof of financial worth.
“Banks alone do not determine an individual’s net worth. A significant number of our members keep all their savings with credit unions, and their statements should be given equal recognition,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, the National President of the Ghana Co-operative Credit Unions Association of Managers, Kennedy Yeboah, urged operators to invest in technology to strengthen operations and improve service delivery.
He further explained that expansion is no longer about putting up physical buildings but rather adopting strategies that make it easier for members to connect with their unions, no matter where they are.
Speaking on the theme “Governance, Leadership and Risk Management.” he reiterated that the theme reflects the cooperative and human-centered nature of credit unions. He added that the annual educational conference is also an opportunity to train managers to protect themselves and educate members on cybersecurity.
The Ghana Co-operative Credit Unions Association exists to promote and empower credit unions by providing both financial and non-financial services to members nationwide.
