The Minority in Parliament has accused the Communications Minister, Samuel Nartey George, of inconsistency in the ongoing standoff with MultiChoice over DStv subscription charges.

They have called on him to resign voluntarily, or they will mount pressure on the government to remove him.

Addressing the media, Member of Parliament for Abirem, and the Deputy Ranking on Parliament’s Communications Committee, Charles Asuako Owiredu questioned the U-turn in the Minister’s stance on the matter.

The Minority says it did not understand why Sam George, who previously vowed not to accept any solution short of a 30% reduction in subscription fees, now appears to be backing DStv’s proposal to upgrade packages instead of cutting prices.

“The minister thereafter constituted a committee, chaired by himself, to further engage with MultiChoice, and came to announce the outcome on September 29th. The display of disingenuity and deceit in what we properly termed a “settings” update was seen by all of you. The Minister completely abandoned his original firm 30% subscription fee reduction stance, for the ongoing promotional offers by MultiChoice, which he claimed was a generational success story,” Mr Owiredu said.

The Minority is making two other demands. They are:

1. That the Minister renders an unqualified apology to Ghanaians for the waste of the nation’s time and resources on this venture.
2. We call on him to account for the fines levied on DStv

The Minority proposed two recommendations to remedy the situation, including a call on government to reduce the tax price buildup of DSTv and also a boycott of the platform if subscribers find it expensive.
