The Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has criticised the political class for prioritising power at the expense of unemployment in the country.

He says the rate of unemployment, particularly in the artisanal sector, is quite disturbing and poses a security threat to the nation.

The Member of Parliament for Effutu in the Central region has pointed out that “the unemployment situation in Ghana especially among those in the artisanal category and that is where I think the political class has not done much and the rate of unemployment among this class of Ghanaians is a major security threat. The political class must congregate around this issue to get the narrative right and put together a new national call of accountability, hard work, dedication and perseverance.”

He notes there appears to be an impunity running through the country which the political class must address to ensure its minimisation as part of the measures to curbing the unemployment challenge.

Speaking on responsible leadership and inclusive growth at a Bradford University engagement at the British Council Wednesday, March 27, 2024, Mr. Afenyo-Markin reemphasised the need for the political class to find an antidote to the festering impunity which is eroding the future of the country’s youth.

“So, I ask myself, 2024 we all want to win elections but we are not paying attention to the deliverables that will sustain our own nation. So, there seem to be an impunity moving through Ghanaian society.

“We are the ones who are given power, we cannot over-depend on civil society so we as a political class must identify this and be bold that if you get it wrong you must be punished, if you get it right, you have to be rewarded. If the psyche of the Ghanaian youth is positioned this way, impunity will be minimised,” he explained.
