Ghana is seeking a postponement of the All African Games it is billed to host this year to April 2024 due to inadequate preparation.

A recommendation from the Parliamentary Select Committee on Youth, Sports and Culture to postpone the African Games slated to take place August this year has been okayed by the Ministry and Local Organizing Committee.

They are asking for postponement because they believe the impase between Africa Union (AU), ANOCA & AASC has affected Ghana’s preparation for the Games.

Even though Ghana has intensified its lobbying at the Africa Union –who are owners of the African Games –it is worrying to note the AU is not consenting to the plea but rather wants to hand the hosting right to another country.

Their reason is to avoid distortions on their calendar.

Below is a portion of the Parliamentary Select Committee report on Sports for the year 2022, stating why the Games should be postponed.

“The Committee also observed that the inability to resolve the impasse between the African Union (AU), the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and the Association of African Sports Confederations (AASC) will affect the preparation towards the 13th African Games 2023 and may result in the need for a change in date from August 2023 to April 2024 as previously proposed.

“The Committee therefore urged the Minister of Youth and Sports & the Local Organizing Committee to work assiduously to resolve the impasse to enable Ghana host the 13th African Games,” the document contained.
