The Community Health Nurses Association of Ghana (COHNAG) is demanding a compensation package for its members at Mepe and other flood affected communities as a result of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams water spillage.

The Association wants the government to prioritise the well-being of community health nurses who were affected by the spillage and capture their names in the planned support package for the flood victims.

In the 2024 Budget Statement and Economic Policy read on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta noted that the government has earmarked GH¢220 million to support the relief phase of the communities affected by the floods from the spillage of the Akosombo Dam.

He assured that the government was planning to provide additional resources to restore livelihoods emphasising that the amount covers areas affected along both the Upper and Lower Volta Basins.

National President of COHNAG, Esther Bamfo, addressing the media after a donation to community health nurses at Mepe strappingly indicated that their members have been affected hence the call for a considerable compensation package for them.

“Community health nurses working in these flooding communities have been equally affected, they lost their belongings and have been emotionally and psychologically traumatized.

“So if the government is putting resources together to enable restore livelihoods for the victims, we demand that nurses and other health workers should not be left out,” she reiterated.

Ms. Bamfo entreated the Ghana Health Service to keep equipping the health workers to help manage the situation as well as enabling them to avert possible outbreak of diseases.
