President of the Republic, Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has made new appointments to the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

Effective Thursday, February 1, 2024, the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, will take over as Ghana’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

His appointment is in “consultation with the Council of State, pursuant to the provisions of Article 212 of the Constitution of the Republic,” a statement from the Presidency signed by the Director of Communications, Eugene Arhin, contained.

The Wednesday, January 24, 2024 statement also indicate that the new appointment “follows the imminent completion of the tour of duty and subsequent retirement from the Ghana Armed Forces, on Thursday, 1st February 2024, of the current Chief of Defence Staff, Vice Admiral Seth Amoama.”

“President Akufo-Addo has expressed his deep gratitude to him for his devoted and meritorious service to the Ghana Armed Forces and to the nation,” the statement noted.

Major General Oppong Peprah’s position –Chief of Army Staff –would be taken over by Major General Bismarck Kwasi Onwona with effect from Thursday, February 1.

His appointment, according to the statement, is also in consultation with the Council of State pursuant to the provisions in the 1992 constitution.

Until his new appointment, Major General Onwona, was the Commandant of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College.

“Rear Admiral Issah Adams Yakubu and Air Vice Marshal Frederick Asare Kwasi Bekoe remain in their positions as Chief of Naval Staff and Chief of Air Staff respectively,” according to the statement.
