One police officer, identified as Constable Prince Amoah, has met his untimely death during their usual routine at Enchi-Kwawu in the Aowin municipality of the Western North region.

Reports indicate a team of police personnel went on patrol at Omanpe, on their way, they allegedly went to some of the galamsey sites in Kwawu to monitor the activities ongoing in the area.

While returning from the Galamsey sites, a bridge they were using caved in and their vehicle fell into the river.

Police report indicate one of the police officers died on the spot while four other victims who were with him sustained various degrees of injuries.

The injured have been sent to the Samraboi Government Hospital for treatment.

According to some residents who spoke to Onua News, the officers have regularly been visiting the sites to allegedly extort monies from the illegal miners.

They allege further that the head of the police command is aware of the situation but has kept mute over it due to the benefits he also gets from the ‘galamseyers’.

They also disclosed that this is the second time the Enchi Police District vehicle has fallen into a river at a galamsey site in the area.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Samraboi Mortuary for further investigation.
