Health authorities in the Sefwi Wiawso municipality of the Western North region have confirmed an outbreak of Acute Haemorrhagic Conjunctivitis (AHC), commonly known as Apollo.

They are therefore urging residents to take immediate precautions to prevent the highly contagious eye infection from spreading.

According to a public health advisory, Apollo spreads easily through direct contact with infected eye secretions or contaminated hands and shared items such as towels, tissues, pillows, cosmetics, and eye drops.

Health officials say the common symptoms of the infection include red or bloodshot eyes, excessive tearing or watery discharge, eye pain or irritation, a gritty sensation in the eyes, swollen eyelids, sensitivity to light, and eye discharge that may cause the eyelids to stick together.

Residents are being advised to wash their hands regularly with soap and clean water, avoid touching or rubbing their eyes, and refrain from sharing personal items that come into contact with the face.

People who develop symptoms have also been urged to stay away from school, work, and other crowded places to help reduce transmission.

They are encouraged to seek prompt medical attention at the nearest health facility instead of self-medicating or using unprescribed eye drops, herbal remedies, or other home treatments.

Health authorities stressed that the cooperation of the public is critical to containing the outbreak, urging residents to practice good personal hygiene and seek early medical care to protect themselves, their families, and the wider community.

The public is encouraged to remain vigilant, follow all preventive measures, and report to the nearest health facility if they experience symptoms of the disease.
