Acting Chief Justice, Justice Paul Kwadwo Baffoe-Bonnie, will meet the Appointments Committee of Parliament today, Monday, November 10, 2025, to be vetted for the substantive position.

The event scheduled to take place at 11: a.m follows his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama. Monday’s vetting was confirmed by the Director of Media Relations at Parliament, David Sebastian Damoah.

Baffoe-Bonnie was nominated by the President after the ousting of Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, who served as head of Ghana’s judiciary from 2023.

Members of Parliament, particularly those on the Appointments Committee, will evaluate his qualifications, judicial philosophy, and vision for Ghana’s justice system before making a recommendation to the House for approval.

The Minority in Parliament, led by its leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, had meanwhile, petitioned the Speaker of Parliament on Friday, November 7, 2025, to halt the vetting process until pending court cases involving the former Chief Justice are resolved. But the motion was dismissed by the Speaker, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.

According to Afenyo-Markin, Parliament ought to have deferred the vetting to avoid interfering in the ongoing judicial proceedings, citing constitutional and procedural grounds.

But, the Speaker ruled that there was no constitutional or procedural basis to suspend parliamentary work due to a court case, stressing that such a move would set a dangerous precedent.
