Residents and drivers are complaining over the gaping potholes causing miscarriages among pregnant women on the Ejisu – Onwe and Kwaso roads in the Ashanti region.
They complain that gaping potholes caused women to have a miscarriage. Some commercial drivers and residents of Onwe_ Kwaso and other places have embarked on a demonstration over the poor state of their roads, which one resident complained caused miscarriage.
Many Residents along the road and drivers today, Monday, July 7, 2025, staged a four-hour demonstration to protest the appalling conditions of their roads network particularly, Onwe to Kwaso.
The protesters blocked the roads during the demonstration exercise, making movement of vehicles and pedestrians very difficult on the stretch.
According to the group, “landlords losing tenants because nobody wants to live in the area. The government has failed us.”
The deplorable nature of a section of the Onwe – Kwaso highway and roads linking many communities in the area has been a problem for residents and commuters for some time now.
The protesters claim several calls for the problem to be fixed had fallen on deaf ears, resulting in the demonstration which caused heavy traffic on the roads.
Speaking on GhanAkoma morning show on Akoma 87.9FM in Kumasi with Sir John, some residents and drivers said the bad state of the roads, is affecting their health and finances.
A demonstration, in their view, is the only way they can catch the attention of the government to fix the roads.
The drivers complained that the bad roads are having a heavy financial toll on them.
“You buy shocks [absorbers] [and] within two weeks, one month, your shafts are down because it’s rough; when the rubber of the shafts tear, all the sand will enter your shocks,” they lamented.
A resident also stated that some pregnant women lost their pregnancies due to the bumpy nature of the road.
“Last year, many got pregnant women had miscarriages because of the road. The moment the car bumps into the manhole, your waistline [absorbs the shock] and, so, they had a miscarriage out of this bad road.”
Contributing to the show, Ejisu Municipal Chief Executive, Jerryne Asante, confirmed the miscarriages on the road.
She expressed serious concern about the deplorable nature of the road but promised work will soon begin on that stretch.
She expressed disappointment over the drivers’ decision to embark on a demonstration without seeking permission from the assembly or the Municipal Security Council.
She said bad roads affect the economy and posed risks to commuters, adding that the concerns of the protesters will be addressed with the seriousness it deserved.
