Asantehemaa Nana Afia Konadu Yiadom III has expressed worry over the bulk metre issue at the New Kejetia market that has caused stir between the market board and the traders.

The Queen mother’s worry was revealed by one of the sixty eight queens at the Kejetia Market, Adwenehemaa Nana Grace Agyei Darko.

Speaking on Akoma FM’s current affairs and political show GhanAkoma Tuesday, January 24, 2023, Adwenehemaa [Queenmother of Mad fish sellers] at Kejetia and Central market Grace Agyei Darko revealed that the slow pace at which the Board of the market and management are treating the metre issue at Kejetia has been a headache of the Asantehemaa, hence, the need to expedite processes to mitigate the growing tension at the market.

She added that “there are sixty eight queen mothers [market leaders] who have been appointed by the Asantehemaa so we work in the capacity and powers of the Golden stool; the Queen is really worried about the several issues at the market, topical among them is the single metre the over seven thousand shops are hooked unto. So the KMA Mayor and the market management must sit up and resolve this issue once and for all.”

There are over seven thousand lockable shops inside the Kejetia market and all these shops are connected to one metre. So at the end of the month, the electricity tariff is shared among the traders, a situation they have vehemently spoken against and demanded each shop gets its separate metre.

The single metre being used by the traders has created a lot of problems including the recent power cuts at the market.

Since the traders’ plea for individual metres have fallen on deaf ears, the piled up charges they resisted in the process resulted to the debt of over GH₵4.6 million.
