Three persons have died in a road crash involving three vehicles at Hemang in the Atwima Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred around 5:20 a.m. on Friday, March 20, 2026, near the River Aboabo stretch.

The accident involved a Man Diesel tipper truck (GC-3786-21), a DVLA-plated Nissan Juke (DVLA 5244), and a Toyota Vitz.

According to our source, the tipper truck, which was loaded with sand and travelling from Santasi Apire, suffered a tyre burst, thus losing two of its front tyres near a fuel station at Hemang. The driver subsequently lost control, veered into the opposite lane, collided head-on with an oncoming Nissan Juke, and overturned on its side.

The Nissan Juke, which was travelling from Ampatia towards Santasi, was dragged for about 20 metres upon impact. Both the driver and a passenger died instantly, with the vehicle left severely mangled.

In a related development, a Toyota Vitz descending a nearby hill at top speed crashed into the rear of the fallen tipper truck moments after the initial collision.

The tipper truck driver fled the scene shortly after the accident.

The driver of the Toyota Vitz sustained severe injuries, including fractures to both legs, while a female passenger who was rushed to the HopeXchange Medical Centre later succumbed to her injuries, bringing the death toll to three.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) at Kajetia responded to the scene to conduct rescue operations. But, the team reportedly faced significant challenges extricating the victims from the wreckage, spending over two hours to retrieve the bodies.

Our source said the bodies were covered with plantain leaves before being conveyed to a morgue.

The source told our news team that the driver of the Nissan Juke cried out for help after the crash, but residents were unable to rescue him due to a lack of appropriate equipment.

Police officers from the Suntreso Divisional Command and Ampatia later arrived at the scene following a distress call.

Residents criticised authorities for failing to adequately equip emergency response teams, observing that the delay in rescue efforts may have worsened the situation.

The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited at a local morgue for preservation and autopsy.
