According to Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng is better placed to respond to whether the alleged money laundering case against the former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah, has officially concluded.

However, Mr. Dame maintained that, as far as he is concerned, the Special Prosecutor, having returned the seized funds to the former Minister and indicating that there was no evidence of money laundering, has no case against the former Minister.

In an interview on Joy FM on Thursday, May 2, Mr. Dame said, “As far as I’m concerned, there was a clear report on the investigations by the Special Prosecutor. And paragraph two of the Special Prosecutor’s statement…no direct and immediate evidence of corruption has been found in the seized funds and a frozen bank account linked to Madam Cecilia Dapaah.”

“So, indeed, the question that you’re asking me ought to be asked the special prosecutor…has he closed the investigations relating to Cecilia Dapaah? And my understanding from this is indeed he has come to a definite conclusion that there was no evidence and for that matter, the matter was closed.

Furthermore, the Attorney-General noted that if indeed the funds were still a subject of investigation, they would not be released to the former Minister.

Mahama to investigate Cecilia Dapaah’s case

In a related development, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has stated that his government will reopen investigations into the alleged money laundering case against the former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah.

The former President wrote on X on Thursday, “My government will reopen investigations into alleged acts of corruption and graft in the Cecelia Dapaah case.”

The comment of the NDC 2024 presidential candidate comes following the Attorney-General’s advice for the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to discontinue its investigation into the alleged money laundering case against the former Minister.

However, Mr. Dame took a swipe at the flagbearer of the NDC for stating that his government will reopen investigations into Cecilia Dapaah’s case.

According to the Attorney-General, Mr. Mahama is “playing cheap politics,” stressing that the former President was not abreast of all the details of the matter before making such comments.

“He is only playing cheap politics. He hears something, then he says I will fix it,” Mr. Dame said.

The accused persons, Patience Botwe (18 years old) and Sarah Agyei (30 years old) were charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and five counts of theft.

The stolen items included US$1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghanaian Cedis, with the thefts believed to have taken place between July and October 2022.
