Assembly members in the country are raising concerns about deductions on their allowance despite the warning by the sector minister to the various Municipal, Metropolitan and District Assemblies (MMDAs) not to make any deductions from the GH¢1,300 monthly payment.
The Assembly members say some have received their allowance while others are yet to receive theirs, but the strange issue on the allowance is the 20% and 10% tax deductions by various assemblies.
The President of the Ghana Association of Assembly Members, Frank Ackah Nelson, in an interview with Onua News Nsem Titire on July 31 said, “about 70% of our members are yet to receive the allowance”.
“There are some issues on the payment. Some taxes are being deducted from the allowance. Other assemblies do not take the taxes, so some assembly members have rejected the money,” he stressed.
Mr. Nelson explained that “the Minister said there should be no tax deductions, but some are deducting 20% tax, others are deducting 10 % tax, while others are not deducting any tax”.
“We are not saying they should not deduct any tax, but we want a uniform one. We want the Minister to come out to explain what percentage of tax should be deducted,” he pleaded.
Mr. Nelson called for “LI to back this payment”. “It should be paid into our accounts. It should not be paid on tabletop”.
