Fire has destroyed a 4-bedroom self-contained apartment around the midnight of Friday, September 23, 2022, at Assin Fosu in the Assin Central District of the Central Region.

The fire victims who are in their 70s were fast asleep when the incident happened.

Even though there were no casualties, properties worth thousands of Cedis were burnt to ashes by the high blazing inferno.

The victims have, however, been rushed to the hospital for medical attention since they were suffocated by the smoke.

Eyewitnesses who spoke with Rich FM’s Obaapa Adwoa Benyiwaa Kwanimaa, who also reports for Onua News explained they got notice of the heavy flames and smoke in the sky from the victims’ residence accompanied by slim voices shouting for help.

They rushed to the scene and with the help of other neighbours who were equally awakened by the sounds of explosions caused by the raging inferno to bring the situation under control.

An eyewitness said, they placed calls to the fire service station but were directed to the National Headquarters of the Fire Service, Accra, and were also redirected to Cape Coast before Assin Fosu.

“So by the time the firefighters arrived around 2am everything has been consumed by the fire beyond recognition including the roofing,” they said.

Another added “I couldn’t sleep around 12 and I heard some noise behind me. So when I got out I saw the flames and started screaming. I was calling people through their windows that Oscar’s father was burning so they should come out.

“I heard the noise and woke up. I also started shouting for people to come and help. So we used up all the water here in an attempt to douse the flame,” a lady disclosed.

One gentleman who lives at the vicinity also shared that “the fire would have extended to the other rooms if we had waited small.”

“I heard the noise around 1am that Oscar’s father is burning so we should come out. We had enough water in the kitchen so that helped to some extent. Others also brought some from outside before the fire service arrived,” a woman indicated.

The fire personnel has launched an investigation into the matter to ascertain what brought about the fire outbreak and also to assess the extent of damage.
