A former Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), John Dramani Mahama, has urged the military to tone down in the manner with which they react to issues as they try to maintain a serene atmosphere at Bawku.

He says even as the task is a difficult one, he wants the military to reason with the Ghana Police Service to provide peace in the municipality and across the entire nation.

In a post on social media Sunday, January 21, 2024, the former president was “saddened and disturbed” by the killing of the three young men who died from the shooting by the men supposed to be protected by the Ghana Armed Forces.

“I am deeply saddened and disturbed by recent developments in the Bawku municipality and the killing of three men, as confirmed by soldiers from the Ghana Armed Forces.

“While I recognise that our security services face the difficult task of securing peace in the Bawku area, the military must work hand in hand with the police to provide safety and security in the Bawku municipality and across the nation.

“As a former Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, I urge the military personnel to remember their duty to protect the people and uphold the peace,” he encouraged.

Rather than the increasing insurgency, Mr. Mahama has asked residents to consolidate the peace they have for a better development, whilst grieving with the bereaved families.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims during this difficult time, even as I call upon the people of Bawku to endeavour to promote and consolidate peace to enable the positive development of the municipality of Bawku,” he noted.

“Let us all work together to ensure justice is served and peace is restored in Bawku,” the 2024 NDC flag bearer added.
