The Black Queens opened their campaign in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a 2-0 loss to South Africa’s Banyana Banyana on Monday, July 7.
Two first-half goals by the defending champions within six minutes put the game beyond coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren’s girls.
The first came in the 27th minute when a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) called a penalty infringement against Ghana.
Linda Motlhalo converted from the spot to give the Banyana Banyana the need boost.
Jermaine Seoposenwe made it 2-0 as her low drive beat Cynthia Konlan Findiib in post for the Queens.
A much more improved performance by the West Africans saw them hit the post twice.
First was Alice Kusi’s long-range strike, which beat Andile Dlamini in post for the South Africans but couldn’t go past the cross bar.
Second was Evelyn Badu’s header also coming off the crossbar.
Ghana’s next encounter will be in Berkane on Friday against Mali.
