A goal scored in each half gave England’s Lionesses a 2-0 win over Ghana’s Black Queens in an international friendly match played Tuesday.

The first goal, scored by Southampton academy graduate Lucia Kendall in only her second start for the European champions, came as early as the 5th minute while the second goal, scored by substitute Alessia Russo, came as late as in injury time.

It was a late penalty conceded by the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Bronze medallists.

The European champions had whitewashed China 8-0 going into the game at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton

This may have sent jitters to the Ghanaians as they conceded very early in the game.

But they regained composure to hold the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup finalists albeit having their woodwork hit four times before the second goal.

Chloe Kelly was forced out of the game injured as both England and Ghana wrap up their year.

Ghana will await their opponents for next year’s WAFCON, which also serves as qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, while England have Ukraine and Iceland to prepare for in the World Cup qualification campaign.
