Haruna Iddrisu, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South and former Minority Leader, has asked those putting the illegal mining blame on John Mahama to desist from it.

According to him, the menace, also known as ‘galamsey’, should be blamed on the President in whom all mineral resources in the country are vested according to the constitution.

The former Minister of Communications says he is surprised that despite the constitution making it clear, people still choose to blame the former President for what is happening in the mining sector.

Speaking at the NDC’s campaign launch at Hamile in the Lambusie constituency, Mr Iddrisu said since the President is the one responsible for the resources of the land, he should be solely held responsible for the mayhem being caused by the practice.

“When people talk about galamsey, they forget one important thing. They should read Article 268 of the Constitution: all mineral resources in Ghana are vested in the president. That president is Nana Akufo-Addo, not John Mahama. If it is not being managed well, if it is being handled in a way that destroys our livelihoods, we will hold Nana Addo solely responsible,” he stated.

He says Ghanaians should stop dragging the former President’s name into the issue since he is not the one in charge.

“So, they should stop dragging John Mahama’s name into it. We did not give John Mahama the power, authority, or mandate today to oversee the proper management of our mineral resources. That responsibility lies with Nana Akufo-Addo,” he stated.
