Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, is calling on the International Monetary Fund to scale up support for Africa’s artificial intelligence capabilities, cybersecurity and digital infrastructure to accelerate economic transformation across the continent.

Speaking at the 2026 African Caucus Meeting with the IMF Managing Director in Bangkok, Thailand, Dr. Asiama said gaps in regulatory capacity, financing and infrastructure continue to constrain Africa’s safe and inclusive adoption of artificial intelligence.

He urged the Fund to provide tailored technical assistance, strengthen Africa’s voice in shaping global digital standards, and integrate AI-related risks and opportunities into its economic surveillance and financial sector assessments.

Dr. Asiama also called for affordable financing for secure digital public infrastructure and deeper analysis of AI’s implications for productivity, employment and financial stability.

Meanwhile, Ghana is expected to use the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Thailand to attract investment and secure beneficial agreements with development partners.

Officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana are expected to hold joint and separate briefings with investors to outline developments in the Ghanaian economy.

The engagements form part of efforts to strengthen investor confidence and mobilise support for Ghana’s economic development.
