Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Energy Minister, would have been asked to apologise or got sacked for his “provide your timetable” comment if he was serving under John Mahama, National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, has noted.

Comparing the Minister’s statement to that of the former District Chief Executive of the Ahafo Ano South district of the Ashanti region, Gabriel Barima, popularly known as “Tweaa DCE” for some remarks he made after being heckled during a speech, Sammy Gyamfi said Mahama reprimanded him and later sacked him when he felt no remorse for his actions.

During the inauguration of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) campaign team in the Ashanti Region, the Manhyia South lawmaker challenged those advocating for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to issue a load-shedding timetable to present their own proposed schedules.

He told critics to develop their own timetables for the erratic power supply otherwise referred to as dumsor,  if they deemed it necessary. Dr. Opoku Prempeh questioned the rationale behind creating a timetable when the ECG has confirmed that no such plan is in place.

Sammy Gyamfi, speaking on Maakye with Captain Smart on Onua TV Wednesday, March 27, 2024, alleged that rather than being rebuked, the President and the Vice are rather commending the Dr. Opoku Prempeh with promotions for disrespecting Ghanaians.

“If Mahama was the President, he would have apologised or got sacked for this comment. Do you remember “who said tweaa?” He was speaking in public and someone gave him a cheek and for this President Mahama summoned him to the Jubilee House and reprimanded him to go and apologise for his words. He went to defend his comments in an interview in less than two weeks and when Mahama heard it, he sacked him without even alerting him.

“That’s the kind of leader we are talking about here. Because President Mahama has respect for human, he expects those serving in his government to reflect same to all manner of persons. On the other hand, Napo is rather being promoted by Akufo-Addo and Bawumia whilst reigning insults at people,” he juxtaposed.

The Head of the NDC Communications Bureau cited other instances where the Energy Minister disrespected Ghanaians, including an allegation he made about some people who collapsed at the Black Star Square whilst resolving their challenges with the school’s placement system in 2017.

“In September 2017 when the SHS placement was being done ahead of the Free SHS, there were some challenges so people trod the Independence Square with their wards to seek placement for them and because the place was choked, some of them collapsed and that’s normal when people pile up.

“But Napo came to tell us that nobody has collapsed but rather, it is John Mahama who has bused people to the Independence Square and bribed them to pretend they have collapsed to tarnish the government’s image. He was Minister for Education then. It was until he was being vetted again as Energy Minister that he reluctantly retracted after failing to provide evidence to buttress his lies and realised there will be repercussions,” the vociferous lawyer recounted.
