Over 30 students of Ajumako Afransi Technical and Vocational Institute in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District of the Central Region have been hospitalised over a purported food poisoning.

Although lab results are yet to identify what caused the reaction, preliminary probe has revealed that the reaction came after they consumed some ‘waakye‘ for lunch on Tuesday, June 10, 2024. They were having continuous defecation and vomiting.

The victims were transported between the Salvation Army Polyclinic at Ajumako Baah and the Ajumako District Government Hospital for treatment.

Some of them started they experienced stomach ache right after eating the waakye during lunch where their teachers rushed them to the hospital.

Some parents who got the information visited their wards at the hospitals. The school authorities were yet to comment on the issue as at the time this report was being filed.

Meanwhile, a Physician Assistant at the Salvation Army Polyclinic at Ajumako Baah, Daniel Agyeakpor, explained that scores of the students stormed their facility with complaints of vomiting and defecating which they have conducted checks to ascertain the cause.

“Students from Afranse TVI started trooping into our facility with diarrhoea and vomiting. They were about 20 or more and some are still coming. We don’t know what happened so we are now waiting for the lab results. We can’t jump into conclusion without investigations. Few of them came during the day and it’s normal because they usually come when they reopen but over the night, they started trooping in,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the Administrator of the hospital disclosed that some of the students were treated in chairs because they don’t have enough beds to cater for them all. He called on the government and benevolent people to come to their aid.

“We have some staff we are paying ourselves so we would want the government to come and absorb them so we can be a little relieved. We have issues with our beds, mattresses, etc,” he stated.
