Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff, has apologised to the Church of Pentecost and its Chairman, Apostle Dr. Eric Kwabena Nyamekye, over some disparaging comments made against him by a government appointee.
Apostle Nyamekye has been attacked by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr. Mavis Awusi, for commenting on the devastating impact of illegal mining, also known as ‘galamsey’, on the environment.
The comments had since generated public backlash, forcing the Chief of Staff to apologise to the man of God and the entire Church.
Apostle Nyamekye, had, during the General Council Meeting of the Church, raised serious concerns about the canker and its impact on environmental degradation.
He pointed out that the pollution of rivers and streams has become so severe that some Christian communities are now unable to perform traditional baptism rites in natural water bodies, forcing them instead to rely on artificially constructed pools.
Following the concerns, Dr. Mavis Awusi reacted in a media interview, warning the Church’s Chairman that he would be “dealt with”, should he continue with such remarks.
Meanwhile, Mr. Debrah, in an effort to ease tensions and restore cordial relations, during the occasion of his birthday celebration at the Church of Pentecost at Trasacco on Sunday, April 26, 2026, addressed the matter before the congregation.

In the presence of the congregants, the Chief of Staff expressed regret over the development and appealed for forgiveness, indicating Dr. Awusi’s remarks were a slip and urged the Chairman and the entire Church to forgive them.
“God continue to bless you. But the Chairman of our church, you know, myself, Elder Ofosu Ampofo, our Local Government Minister and several others, are members of your church. A few days ago, one of our colleagues, Dr. Mavis Awusi, slipped a bit against you. I want on this occasion to commemorate my birthday, to let the whole church forgive us.
“It was just a slip. It wasn’t intentionally done to malign our church. I believe sincerely that you forgive her and forgive us and accept us as your children. God richly bless all of you.”
