The Chirano Sefwiman Foundation has provided educational scholarships for 43 brilliant but needy students to improve Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in the Western North region.
The Chirano Sefwiman Foundation comprises twenty (20) communities within the catchment area of the Chirano mines.
Using royalties from the mines, the 20 communities established the foundation to drive development across their communities.
As part of their activities, the foundation has provided scholarships to 43 students; 24 of the beneficiaries are graduates from various universities who studied various STEM courses, while 21 students are new awardees.
Nana Elluo Panin is the chairman of the Chirano Sefwiman Foundation. Speaking to the media after a successful ceremony at Chirano, said that, through the foundation, they have been able to produce medical doctors, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, midwives, and nurses.
He further commended the Asante Gold Chirano Mines Limited for their unflinching support to the foundation.
Lois Karikari, an electrical and electronic engineering student at UMaT-Tarkwa, on behalf of the beneficiary students, expressed their appreciation to the foundation and Chirano Mines for the support.
She said they understand that the scholarships come with a responsibility; therefore, they would be committed to working hard, staying focused, and making the most of the opportunity.
On his part, the general manager for Asante Gold Chirano Limited, Stephen Asante Yamoah, congratulated both the graduates and the new scholarship recipients. He advised that their performance must demonstrate that the investment made in them was worthwhile.
